Welcome to the Applied English Center at the University of Kansas.

The Applied English Center (AEC) has a long and illustrious history of serving international students in their goals of English language learning.  The program was founded in 1964 and was one of the first intensive English programs in the United States.

The AEC and the University of Kansas have been and continue to be open, supportive, and welcoming places to be.  Lawrence is a fantastic, traditional college town that offers so many opportunities to meet people.  Here you can enjoy the four beautiful seasons and get involved in a variety of community events.

Our goal is to help you achieve your goals, and we have many ways to do that.  The administrators, staff, and faculty of the AEC are constantly developing new courses, new skills, and new ways to support our students, not just in their English language skills, but in their understanding of the culture and ways to make friends and find support systems in the U.S. and abroad.

As you look around our website, you’ll see the variety of classes and experiences that are available through the AEC and the University of Kansas.  We help prepare students who need to master English before beginning their university studies, as well as those students who only wish to study for a short time in the U.S.  We work with graduate students to refresh their skills in research writing, academic presentations, pronunciation, and other skills. We also work with departments to develop customized programs for particular groups of students.  Additionally, we offer online programs for those wishing to learn more about studying in the U.S. or EFL teachers wanting to improve their teaching skills.

There are so many things that the AEC can help you with.  Plus, you’ll find that Lawrence and the University of Kansas community are incredibly welcoming to people from other countries and offers many opportunities not only to practice English and get to know American culture outside of the classroom, but to also become a real member of the community.

The AEC is a great place to begin your experience as a Jayhawk whether you are here for a short time, are online, or plan to stay for a degree program at KU.

Let us know how we can help you.

Welcome and Rock Chalk!
