Events in Lawrence

Final Fridays is a monthly free arts festival. On the last Friday of every month (all year long!) from 5 until 9 pm, the streets of Downtown Lawrence erupt, storefronts convert into flash spaces, and performances and exhibits spill in and out of galleries and businesses.  Activities for kids, exhibitions designed to challenge adults, music, dance and theater for all ages are all within walking distance of each other.

From green horses to over-the-top floats, the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Lawrence is full of Irish fun. Each year, on March 17th at 1 p.m., thousands of people don their green and line the streets in downtown Lawrence to watch the parade pass by.

Art in the Park is an annual juried outdoor exhibition that draws more than 150 artists and takes place on the first Sunday in May. Along with the finest work from area artists and craftspeople, the event features live music, food vendors and family activities.

The Lawrence Busker Festival, held during the last weekend of May, is the area's largest gathering of street performers. Some of the most talented freaks, geeks, artists and musicians in the area perform on various street stages for tips and applause.

The City of Lawrence Fireworks Display & Party in the Park takes place on July 4th in Watson and Burcham Parks. In addition to the fireworks show in the evening, there are numerous food vendors, a children's play area, as well as bands and other performances.

At the Downtown Sidewalk Sale in July, thousands of bargain hunters fill downtown before the sun comes up as store owners offer the best discounts of the year.

The Annual Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Championships takes place the 4th weekend in August at South Park. There are free concerts, great food, special activities for the kids and, of course, the state’s top musicians battling for the title of state champion in 9 contests.

St. John's Oktoberfest takes place on the last Saturday in September at St. John Catholic Church at 1234 Kentucky Street, just west of South Park. Enjoy authentic German food, dancing, music, activities for kids and more!

Dress up and come to Downtown Lawrence on October 31st for the annual trick-or-treating. Downtown merchants greet children with sweet treats and Halloween trinkets.

The Annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony takes place downtown after sundown on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Enjoy the beautiful lights downtown, singing by local choral groups, and the "rescue" of Santa off the rooftop of Weaver's Department Store.

The Annual Bizarre Bazaar is held on Thanksgiving weekend at the Lawrence Arts Center at 940 New Hampshire St., between 9th and 10th streets. It features original and unusual hand-crafted specialty items for all occasions, food, and entertainment.

The Downtown Lawrence Old Fashioned Christmas Parade, which takes place the first Saturday in December at 11am, features exclusively horse-drawn carriages, wagons, coaches and riders decorated for the season.
