Yes, you can. It will be important to manage your time to meet the needs of this program. Besides the classroom and teaching requirements, we recommend you plan on spending 1-2 hours per day outside of class to work on homework assignments. We are happy to work with you to help you maximize your time and reach your potential!  

Absolutely!  As part of our program, you’ll have the opportunity to observe experienced instructors as well as your peers. As part of your teaching, you’ll have the guidance of an instructor to help you prepare to teach, and an instructor will always be in the room while you are teaching. You’ll attend workshops and debriefing sessions specifically geared towards helping you prepare and reflect on what worked well and what didn’t and how to improve for next time. The instructors and the material will provide a guide even if you have never taught before! 

Yes, a TEFL certificate provides you with training you need to begin your journey as an English teacher. This certificate is recognized around the world as an entry-level qualification for a position teaching English.  It will increase your chances of being hired by a school or language institute and can provide you with a higher starting salary.  

Obtaining a TEFL certificate and teaching English abroad can serve as pathways to a career as a teacher. At the School of Education at the University of Kansas, you could earn a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsement, M.A., or M.S.E. It’s okay to allow for flexibility in terms of where you want to teach. Our program is designed to provide you with training that you can then adapt to various teaching contexts.  The world will be open to you with a TEFL certificate!

Although we do not provide automatic job placement, we do have resources and instructors who will share information with you and help support you as you decide on where you want to embark on your teaching journey.
