Testing and Placement
Students who do not meet minimum score requirements for full-time academic enrollment must take the English language proficiency test. Students who pass this test will enroll in full-time academic coursework.
Students who do not pass this test will enroll in part-time or full-time English study at the Applied English Center (AEC).
Placement Testing at KU
Students who are accepted to KU but do not meet minimum requirements for full-time academic enrollment will take an English language proficiency test before the start of classes. The name of the test is the Versant Proctored English Placement Test. Students who pass this test will enroll in full-time academic coursework. Students who do not pass this test will enroll in part-time or full-time English study at the Applied English Center (AEC).
Placement in IEP Classes
There are two possible results from the English language proficiency test: passing or placement into AEC classes. The AEC has five levels of courses, plus a Basic level for students just beginning their English language study. Students typically spend one semester per level. Of course, how long you spend in the IEP depends on your level of English when you arrive, the speed at which you learn, and your willingness to study hard and immerse yourself in an English language environment.
